Interview with XPLANT KAR 2009 Driver: John Clout

John Clout is in his sixth year with the Kidney Kar Rally, after receiving a kidney transplant back in 2009. It’s only right that his Subaru Outback that he uses to drive the rally routes each year, is aptly named “XPLANT 2009”.

“We’ve fixed it up with oversized tires to deal with the mud and sandy terrain,” says John.

“In our first year of rallying we had to replace our shock absorbers in Port Macquarie, so we’ve also put in some heavy duty shock absorbers for good measure!”

John’s first rally experience was as a guest of the Kidney Kar Rally medical support team driver, Phil Hoey (read about the great work Phil and his navigator Les do for the rally every year). Since then, he entered his own team and managed to come in 5th place out of about 45 cars last year! What an effort!

This year, John will not only be driving the new route from Alice Springs, but he’ll be doing so with the direction of brand new navigator Brian Roy. He’s confident that Brian will take to the position like a duck to water after a couple of practice runs!

XPLANT 2009 enters the rally each year with the help of around seven very generous sponsors, helped along the way by regular Bunnings BBQs and raffles.

John and his team over the years would like to thank the following people and companies for their amazing contribution to the Kidney Health Australia cause:

And, what’s John looking forward to this time round?

“It’ll just be great to catch up with everyone live every year. You build some really great friendships when you take part in the rally.”
