Bendigo urged to jump on board Kidney Kar rally

COMPETITORS of the upcoming 2012 Kidney Kar Rally have extended a challenge to Bendigonians to jump on board.Boort born and bred driver Julian Smith has fond memories of traveling to Bendigo as a young boy and had a few words of encouragement for potential participants.“If I can do it, so can they,” he said. “This will be my third year.“A lot of people who used to live in and around Boort have now relocated to Bendigo and we’re hoping to get them involved.” Rally car veteran Alan Jones, who will be taking part for the sixth time in the fundraising event’s 24-year history, advised people not to be discouraged by the off-road component of the rally.“There are provisions that allow you to ‘kruise’ (on-road) and meet up with other drivers at the night spots for the social side of things,” he said.“You can also compete in any normal road car, so long as it’s mechanically sound.”The event will kick off in Perth before making its way across the Nullarbor and arriving in Bendigo on August 24.Mr Smith said he was looking forward to bringing the fun and excitement of the rally to central Victoria. “We normally put on a show for everyone, it’s a colourful display of all kinds of cars and people,” he said. “Car enthusiasts and the kids in particular love it.”Event organiser Kim Davis said she had started getting inquiries from curious locals.“We have had a few calls this week from people interested in the rally,” she said.“I put their starter packs in the mail and we would love to have them on board.”Applications for rally close in June. Entry forms can be downloaded from kidneykarrally.com.au or obtained from Mrs Davis on 1300 300 544.
